Your first Sunday, step by step
New to running? New to run clubs? Perfect. Here’s exactly how it goes.
- We meet at 8 am. Every Sunday, in the Patuxent Plaza parking lot in Solomons. Rain or shine.
- A quick hello and warm-up. We stretch a little, say hi, and meet whoever’s new that week.
- Then we head out. We do an out-and-back loop of around 3 miles, and there are options for a little more or a little less.
- We run in intervals. One minute of walking, then one minute of running. Need extra walking breaks? Take them. Everyone has a different fitness level, and we want everyone to feel comfortable.
- We gather for the photo. When we’re back at the parking lot, we all meet up for the post-run photo.
- Then coffee and a chat. Those who are able head to the Beanery or Juice Buzz for refreshments and to socialize.
You don’t need to…
- have any running experience
- be at a certain pace
- be able to run for long stretches
- know anyone in the group
- RSVP (usually; we’ll say so if a special event needs one)
- show up every week
What to bring and wear
- Comfortable clothes and shoes you can walk and run in.
- Water, and a layer or rain jacket if the forecast says so. We run in all weather.
- Optional: a phone to take the group photo with us.
Who can come
Everyone is welcome: new and old, slow or fast. Kids ages 7 to 12 are welcome with 1:1 adult supervision at all times; we can’t take anyone younger, for safety.
A note on safety
Smiles for Miles is a social club built around running. Running outside, on or around public roads, has risks. If you join a meetup, you are responsible for your own safety.
